Microsoft is introducing a “Copilot key” on new personal computers running Windows, allowing users to summon an AI agent with the press of a button. This innovation, set to debut on select new personal computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system, empowers users to summon an artificial intelligence (AI) agent effortlessly.

This move is part of Microsoft’s strategy to leverage its influence in the computer industry and reshape the next generation of keyboards.

Microsoft Quietly Launches Copilot App for Android

Microsoft’s strong hold on the PC market, with 82% of desktops, laptops, and workstations running Windows, positions it as a key player in introducing customized keys through licensing agreements with manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, and HP.

At the core of this development is Microsoft’s collaboration with OpenAI, the driving force behind ChatGPT, as the Copilot key serves as a gateway to the expansive world of generative AI applications.

By incorporating an AI button into the keyboard, Microsoft aims to position itself as a front-runner in facilitating seamless access to the potential of AI technology. The Copilot button, marked by a ribbon-like logo, will be placed near the space bar and may replace the right “CTRL” key or a menu key on some computers. Keyboards with the Copilot key will debut at CES 2024 and are expected to ship in late February.

Despite the increasing use of phones for internet and AI applications, the addition of an AI button to keyboards signifies a symbolic beginning to a competitive year for tech companies in the AI space.
